2010 Year in Review: Favorite Recipes

17

2010 was a fabulous year.  Obviously, the biggest standout for me was the birth of our amazing son, Zachary, who is now almost 9 months old.  I can’t believe he’s nearly a year old already! He’s really the best kid (and the cutest, obviously :)) and so far, he loves to eat pretty much everything…except broccoli.  He really is his mother’s son.  He’ll eat it if we trick him and mix it with his favorite, squash or sweet potatoes.  But that’s it! Who can blame him?

This year was also a delicious one. I’ve always enjoyed doing year-end recaps on my blog.  They give me a chance to look back at all my posts from the year and pick out the ones that stood out the most, and that will be made again and again. I love looking at the recaps on other blogs, too, and I think they are a great way to highlight recipes you think readers should try, or a way to point out some favorites to newer readers who may not have had a chance to go through your archives yet.

I decided to use the same format as last year, which is posting your favorite recipes (based primarily on hits) as well as mine.  Some of the recipes overlap, which I guess makes them doubly awesome. Many of these actually come from my 30 x 30 list, so I’m really glad I made that list to push myself to make certain things.  Feel free to also check out my favorite lists from years past.

I  hope you enjoy revisiting some of these recipes!  And, I wish you a wonderful new year!

  1. Stir-Fried Shrimp with Spicy Orange Sauce
  2. Braised Lamb Shanks
  3. Mashed Cannellini Beans
  4. Slowcooker Pulled Chicken
  5. Pork Chops with Mushrooms, Dill, and Sour Cream Sauce
  6. Chorizo and Black Bean Breakfast Burritos
  7. Greek Baklava
  8. Chipotle-Honey Glazed Chicken
  9. Chipotle Beef Tacos with Caramelized Onions
  10. Caramelized Chipotle Chicken

My Favorite Recipes

Sablés.  Okay, so, technically, I made these in 2009, but they didn’t appear on the blog until 2010.  These are some of the easiest and best cookies I’ve had.  Buttery and delicious!

Mashed Pinto Beans with Bacon and Manchego. A kicked-up version of refried beans, these have quickly become a staple in our household.

Baklava. The classic Greek dessert of layered phyllo and chopped walnuts, covered in a healthy dosing of honey syrup.

Braised Lamb Shanks.  I love lamb, I love braising things.  It only makes sense that we loved this dish.  Comforting, hearty, and elegant all at once.

Macaroni and Cheese.  You really can’t go wrong with pasta and cheese, but you can be very, very right when baking it to bubbling perfection and topping it with a crispy coating of panko and butter.

Spiced Roast Chicken Thighs.  These are a bit of a dark horse in the “favorites” list, but they are very deserving of the spot.  Though incredibly easy to throw together and toss in the oven, this chicken is flavorful, fragrant, and spicy (in a not-hot way).  I’ve made this dish several times this year because it’s always good, and I always have the ingredients around.

Chipotle Beef Tacos with Caramelized Onions.  These tacos have just  a few ingredients, and couldn’t be easier.  But still, they manage to be incredibly flavorful.  The goat cheese topping (or some kind of cheese) is a must, in my book!

Tin Roof Ice Cream.  This ice cream is GOOD.  Like, really really good.  It sort of reminds me of the peanut buster parfait at Dairy Queen, only a million times better.  Vanilla ice cream, fudge ripple, and chopped chocolate-coated peanuts.  Hello, love.

Cherry Pie.  My favorite kind of pie, and I’m so happy to finally have had a chance to make it, and with such a delicious recipe!

Pan-Roasted Garlic and Lemon Chicken.  Yet again, another recipe with minimum ingredients and maximum flavor.  A great dish for a weeknight to pull you out of your chicken rut.

Chicken Shawarma.  I’ve been making this for years, and it’s high time the slightly revamped recipe makes it to my favorites list.  Incredibly flavorful chicken that is only made better with a dollop of tahini sauce.

Queso Fundido Burgers.  These have secured a top spot as one of my favorite burger recipes of all time.  Spicy chorizo lends a helping hand to some ground sirloin, and these are topped with gooey cheese, onions, and one of my favorite ingredients on the planet–roasted poblano chiles.

Herbed Focaccia.  This bread is amazingly delicious.  Seriously, one of the best breads I’ve eaten. The perfect chew, texture, and flavor.

Tyropites (Greek Cheese Pies).  Feta and myzithra cheese mixed with herbs and wrapped in phyllo.  A perfect appetizer or something I could easily make a whole meal out of.

Gratin Dauphinoise.  Decadent, creamy au gratin potatoes that no one can resist. Who cares if they have about a million calories?

Fettucine Alfredo.  Everyone should have this really simple recipe in their arsenal.  Creamy, velvety, cheesy pasta goodness.  And a million more calories.

  1. I found your blog this year Elly, and I love it. I’ve combed through the archives and tried so many of your recipes in 2010. My favourite is your Slowcooker Pulled Chicken because it’s so versatile – great filling for quesadillas, enchiladas, or tacos.

Your son is so cute! Looking forward to another year of great recipes!

  2. Thank you Elly for this list of favorites. I am certainly going to try some of thes.
Your son is a sweetheart. Happy New Year!

  3. I think the best part of these recap posts is getting to check out the recipes I may have missed throughout the year. And it’s hard to believe that your son is already 9 months old! It feels like just the other day you were posting about his arrival….

  4. Oh my lord Zachary is the CUTEST THING. You are going to have quite a ladies’ man on your hands.

All of these recipes sound amazing and I have bookmarked ALL OF THEM. Happy new year!
